It was another big week in Sport at DPS with Division Athletics, House Netball, and the State Tee Ball finals being postponed due to flooding. We also had some great sport results out in the community in Martial Arts, Hockey and Basketball.
Bellarine Division Athletics
We had a team 11 students who boarded the mini-bus with Mr Sinnott to compete in the Bellarine Division Athletics at Landy Field. As seems to be the norm down there, the weather was cold and wet and there was a flood watch on the Barwon River. Despite the gloomy conditions, our team achieved some fantastic results and represented the school with distinction.
Special mention must to go Jack in Year 5 who supported his teammates all day, even though the High Jump was cancelled due to the unsafe conditions.
Highlights of the day included:
Chris – 3rd in the 100m
Flynn – 2nd in the Shot Put
Kailee – 2nd in the Long Jump
Leisel – 4th in the 800m
Dakota – 5th in the Triple Jump and 6th in the 100m
Flynn and Kailee have now qualified for the Western Metropolitan Region competition in Keilor, which happens to be on the second day of their Year 5 camp!
State Tee Ball
It wasn’t just the Athletes who had to contend with the weather last week as we received notice that the State Tee Ball Finals had been cancelled due to the diamond being under a couple of feet of water. Luckily, we found out before the team had boarded the bus. At this stage the organisers are still trying to find a date that suits all teams, which is not an easy task for Term 4 as there are so many camps, concerts, graduations and transition days. We will know the rescheduled date in the first week of Term 4 and are keeping our fingers crossed that it does not clash with anything our Year 6s have on. In the meantime, it gives Coach Croxford and the girls even more time to continue their training.
House Netball
The House Netball heads into a thrilling final qualifying round this week with all teams having the potential to make the Grand Final. In a first for House Sport, we had two Year 6 reporters who have recapped the matches. Read all about it here – http://www.drysdaleps.vic.edu.au/?p=10211
Basketball
Congratulations to Archer in Year 6 who won his Grand Final for the Bellarine Storm Basketball team. Archer plays in the Under 14s, despite only being 11.
Hockey
We had three students who narrowly lost their Under 12 Hockey Grand Final for Bellarine Storm. Alex (Yr 5), Max (Yr 6) and Lachie (Yr 6) all played brilliant games but fell just short against the top team Newtown, coming back from 3-0 down with 5 minutes remaining to lose 3-2.
Martial Arts
Cameron (Yr 2), Sam (Yr 6), Elle (Yr 6), Sasha (Yr 6), Cooper (Yr 2) and Lochie (Yr 6) all competed at the I.S.K.A championships in Melbourne on the weekend. They all showed great skilland sportsmanship and have returned home with lots of trophies and a few state champion titles, which they proudly showed off in Assembly this week.
Cameron will be competing in Sydney in October at the World Championships and has been selected to represent Australia in a competition at Disneyland in America next year.
