Drysdale Primary School

NAPLAN

This week our Year 3 and Year 5 students will be taking part in NAPLAN. All of the tests this year will be online except for the Writing task for Year 3. Students have been working with their teachers to learn how to log on and access the tests in preparation for this week.

There are 4 tests that students will complete –

Wednesday 15th March – Year 3 Writing, Year 5 Reading
Thursday 16th March – Year 3 Reading, Year 5 Writing
Friday 17th March – Year 3 Language Conventions, Year 5 Language Conventions
Monday 20th March – Year 3 Mathematics, Year 5 Mathematics

The tests will be at different times – mostly 9am or 11am each of those 4 days. We wish all our students the best in their NAPLAN. All we ask is that they try their best and do what they can and that the learning they have been doing at school every day, every year helps them to do this. Good luck to Year 3 and 5 this week.

School Drop Off Times

Our school has staff onsite from 8:50am each day to supervise our students, as part of our Duty of Care and Yard Supervision Policies. We have 3 staff on yard duty before school from 8:50am – 9:00am each morning to support students in arriving to school safely and moving to class ready for the day. Our school Social Worker is also in the yard supporting students who may be a bit anxious about coming to school.

We understand that some days you may arrive earlier than 8:50am, including when Breakfast Club is open, however parents/carers should be with children during this time, as we don’t have staff out in the yard to supervise until 8:50am.

If your child is arriving before 8:50am regularly please consider using the Before School Care service run by Their Care.

Potato Fair – Friday 31st March 3.30pm-7.30pm

The countdown to our Potato Fair is underway! The Potato Fair event this year will combine our annual Family Dance Night with the re-introduction of our School Fair and will be held on 31st March 2023 from 3.30pm till 7.30pm.

The fair recognises Drysdale’s long history as a potato farming area, and the students, our “Cool Spuds”, are very excited! A shout out to Daniel Lamanna at Stockdale and Leggo Drysdale for being our Major sponsor of the Potato Fair. Thank you to Harris HMC and PFG Financial Services and all the local and small business that have shown support with donations and vouchers.

If you haven’t already ‘liked’ our event page, please do so on Facebook under “Potato Fair” and keep updated with the event details.

This year we are looking at mixing some old-fashioned events such as Potato Sack races, Potato and Spoon races, Potato Lawn Bowls and complimenting them with cake stalls, a second-hand book sale and plant sale. With over 15 local community groups attending and 20 plus small business stallholders, we nearly have a full school oval!

We will have lots of food options for all the family including Twisty Potatoes, Potato Works and our traditional sausage sizzle. Kylie will be opening the school canteen for cold and hot drinks and snacks so please support the canteen and say “hi” on the night! Thanks Kylie!

To embrace Drysdale’s historic railway, a Miniature Train Ride will be available to tour around the oval and our school giving tired legs a rest!

And who can forget the Dunk Tank! Our amazing teachers, including our very own Mitch Sinnott is returning for a guest performance, also to sit in the Hot Seat of the Dunk Tank. A timetable of who will be up and at what time they are being dunked will be announced closer to the event.

Students and families alike will be entertained with Family Dance Night, Face Painting, Animal Petting Zoo, Chair-o-Plane and amazing wildlife presentations and encounters. There is lots to do for everyone!

Don’t forget to get your memorabilia photo with family and friends in the Potato Fair Photo Booth!

To save time queuing on the night, tickets for the kids rides and entertainment will be available prior to and on the night, please keep a look out on how to buy your tickets in the coming days.

A genuine, signed 2022 Premiers Geelong Football Club jumper will be auctioned by Stockdale and Leggo at 6.45pm. You do not want to miss this!

Our Potato Fair will finish with a mini color run from 7pm till 7.30pm on the oval! Such a great night planned!

Our online raffle is now live, including some sensational local prizes with something for everyone! Every ticket purchased will assist with upgrades and enhancements to improving our amazing school. Please consider purchasing a ticket or two. Share the link with friends, families and in your workplaces – Potato Fair Raffle Tickets

Do you have books at home that are in great condition that you no longer need? We are taking donations for our Second-hand Book Sale now! Novels in good condition for all ages welcome! Drop them off to the school during school hours, and Donna or Catherine will show you where to leave them in our new Library!

As with any major school event we need volunteers! This year we need your help more than ever. If everyone can assist in at least ONE timeslot on the evening it would be appreciated. Please sign up by accessing the link below. It’s a great way to help and meet others in your school community! Look forward to seeing you there!

Parent/Carer Volunteers

Each year we have families asking how they can help our school and our students. There are many ways you can help – through the Parents and Friends Group included. If you are keen to volunteer in classes or around the school such as in the Garden or Library we would love your help.

I will be holding a Volunteers Training Session on Thursday March 23rd at 3pm til 3:30pm or Monday March 27th at 9:30am – 10am for any parents or carers that would like to help in school this year.

If you have completed the Training Session in previous years, you will just need to meet with me for the OH&S Induction process and to ensure we have an up to date WWCC card on file. You can contact me via email – ap.support@drysdaleps.vic.edu.au or call the office to arrange a time. This induction will nly take about 10 minutes.

Once the training and OH&S induction are complete this term, you will be able to contact teachers or staff about helping in classes or other areas of our school.

Potato Fair – Cake Stall Donations

We will be holding a cake stall at the Potato Fair and would love some help from our school community by baking some yummy treats to be sold.

Cake stall donation packs (plate, label, bag, tie and drop off instructions) will be sent home with students this week.

Please remember to use the label enclosed to write the name of the product and list the ingredients – anything without an ingredient label unfortunately cannot be sold.

Baked goods can be dropped off on the day of the Potato Fair, noting we do not have access to a fridge to keep things cold, therefore please avoid using fresh cream or anything which can spoil without refrigeration.

Wellbeing And Inclusion

It has been a busy start to the term for the Wellbeing and Inclusion work, with Student Support Group meetings happening over the past few weeks. Teachers should be finished in updating and writing Individual Education Plans for students this week, so if your child needs one you should receive a copy very soon. These IEPs help teachers set targeted and focused goals to support students in their areas of improvement – academically, socially and personally.

We are very lucky to have a large Inclusion team that support students in all class across the school each day, with in class learning support and other adjustments so all students can have a successful day. Our Inclusion Team also support other elements of our school including the garden and worm farm, library, Breakfast Club and intervention supports such as Oral Language Program. They do an amazing job each day and we couldn’t function without this wonderful team of people.

For all things Wellbeing and Inclusion, please reach out to Kate Wojcik via phone call or at ap.support@drysdaleps.vic.edu.au

Breakfast Club

Our Breakfast Club is just a popular as ever. Thank you to all the generous families who have donated items to support the Club. While we have some wonderful community groups that donate to us and allow us to purchase items needed each week, the donations of strawberry jam, paper bags and margarine from our families are just as important to allowing us to feed to many students each week.

We go through 15 or more loaves a bread each morning, which is over 150 students having a cheese, jam or vegemite toastie on their way to class. If you would like to support the Breakfast Club, we are in need of margarine, strawberry jam and paper bags to help us get through to the end of term.

You can drop these items to Breakfast Club on Monday or Friday mornings or to the school office at any time.
Thanks again for your support – Kate, Kendra and Kylie.

TheirCare News

This week at OSHC we are doing all things sport and movement to promote being active and healthy.  Although it feels as though the school year has only just begun, bookings are now open for the Autumn School Holiday Program at Drysdale Primary School.  To view the program and to make bookings please go to http://www.theircare.com.au/holiday-programs.

We would like to take this opportunity to remind parents to make bookings as far in advance as possible to assist with catering and staffing. If parents could also make sure that they make cancellations in advance as well it would be greatly appreciated, especially if they know they will not be contactable on the day. If your child is booked in, but doesn’t arrive, and we confirm with our listed contacts that the child is not safe within a certain period of time, then our policy dictates that we must call the police and report the child missing.

The Great Annual OSHC Easter Egg Colouring Competition has become a bit of a tradition at OSHC over the years. Entries for this year’s competition opened on the 20th of March and close on the 4th
of April. As usual, we will have two separate competitions, one for the Preps and Junior children, and then another for the Middle and Senior children. There are amazing prizes to be won. We’re looking
forward to seeing all of the amazing designs the children produce.
