Return to Onsite Learning

We have been thoroughly enjoying the return of all students to school! It is a huge pleasure to hear the sounds of children working and having fun throughout our classrooms, corridors and out in the yard.

We are aware that everyone’s experiences of remote and flexible learning have been different academically and socially. We will be taking time to reconnect with children and their families.

School Camps

The Education Department has let us know that school camps can run from next Monday, 1st November. This is great news and just in time for our Year 4 camp to Kangaroobie which is going ahead next week Monday 1st to Wednesday 3rd November.

Thank you to our parents and our staff who have worked to complete preparations for camps even in those times when it has looked very unlikely that they would be able to take place. Although excursions are also permitted, we are choosing to adjust our camp itineraries to reduce the risk of COVID infections while the children are away.

The Year 4 Camp to Kangaroobie that leaves on Monday will be based solely at the camp site with additional activities there rather than stopping at Flagstaff Hill on the journey to camp and The 12 Apostles on the way home.

We are making similar adjustments to the Year 6 Camp to avoid stops in central Melbourne. Including the Year 5 camp that is rescheduled to the second week of next year, with the revised settings announced we will be able to run our full camp program.

COVID Update

We have been advised that when the new Operations Guide is released to schools with information about settings once 80% vaccination level is reached later this week this will include permission for schools to operate incursions and excursions, assemblies and other internal events such as graduation.

However, for the time being, we will remain limited to essential visitors and density limits in the hall. This means that we will still not be able to welcome parents back to internal events such as whole school assemblies.

We are anticipating that there will have been a further easing of restrictions (Nov 26th) prior to graduation. We will inform families of graduation plans once we have confirmation of the settings for the post 90% vaccination stage.

Pupil Free Day Yesterday

May I acknowledge the tremendous support of the school community yesterday. I do understand that the timing of the pupil free day became inconvenient with the return to school of all students earlier than expected. The staff spent the day working hard on detailed plans for making the best use of the remaining eight weeks of term to support both the students’ academic learning and their wellbeing.

Our primary academic focus will be on filling in gaps in our reading, writing and maths programs resulting from he lengthy periods of remote learning. We will also be running dedicated sessions to help the children with their social and emotional regulation as they adjust to the re-opening of society.

Please remember that we have a team of staff here at Drysdale PS whose role is to support children who are anxious. If you have concerns about your child, please get in touch with any one of the Principal Team or your child’s classroom teacher.

Year 6 Inquiry

6D, 6K and 56T’s Inquiry Unit from Term 3 culminated in a series of demonstrations of the students’ understanding of the transfer of energy. These creative displays were designed and constructed at home and demonstrated an excellent understanding of the many forms of energy that surround us. It was so positive to see so many students share a project that was completed at home during remote learning. Click read more to view a gallery of some of the projects.
