Drysdale Primary School

Naplan

This year’s NAPLAN tests are set to go ahead next week for students in Year 3 and Year 5. The tests run on Tuesday 11th, Wednesday 12th and Thursday 13th beginning at 9:00am. Please can parents/carers ensure that children in Years 3 and 5 arrive at school on time so that we can start promptly.

The tests cover learning expected to be completed by the end of years 2 and 4. At Drysdale Primary our only expectation is that children make their best effort as we do with all parts of their learning.

If any parents have questions or concerns about this year’s tests, please make contact with me philip.dunlop-moore@education.vic.gov.au .

Prep Enrolments for 2022

If you have a child due to start school in 2022, enrolment forms are available from the school and on our website http://www.drysdaleps.vic.edu.au/?page_id=21734. All students starting school need to have completed an enrolment form and associated documents (birth certificate, immunisation certificate etc.). All prospective students, including younger siblings of children already attending DPS will need to complete these forms.

Tours of Drysdale Primary School can be arranged by contacting the school via email (drysdale.ps@education.vic.gov.au) or via telephone 03 5251 2272. Now that we have managed to bring the total number of students back within the number we can comfortably accommodate at school, we have extended our primary area to include all families living within the 3222 postcode.

Wet Weather

As you will know we have experienced a few wet days recently. When it is raining before school, students should take advantage of one of the many undercover areas we have to shelter from the rain.

In common with all Victorian state schools, teachers are responsible for the children from ten minutes before the start of the school day. At Drysdale this is 8:50am. On dry days this is the time when staff are on duty outside. On wet days this is when children can go into the classrooms to be supervised.

Students who need to arrive before this time should be booked into Camp Australia’s before school care program.

The AP WrAP

We are into May already and there are so many great things happening across the school this month. School photos and the Superwoman Stall this week, along with some excursions and incursions, means there is lots of excitement around the school.

This week we had Violet from Year 6 share some work from her Inquiry Learning project in Term 1. She is very passionate about saving and protecting animals, particularly elephants, and wrote to a company to share her concerns about the use of palm oil. This company replied with their plan to reduce their use and ensure it is managed in a sustainable way. It was so great to read this correspondence and hear of the thoughtful work from Violet in going beyond the project’s expectations. Well done Violet!!

RDA is happening again this Friday. We look forward to watching the students attending this continue to develop in confidence when riding their horse.

Thank you to those that attended the School Volunteer and Helper Training session this afternoon. We can’t wait to have you all supporting our staff and students in class and in the school. If you couldn’t make it today, not to worry. We are running another session next Wednesday May 12, at 5pm.

Book Fair 2021

We are very excited to be running a book fair again this term from May 18th – 21st. Our book fair will be coinciding with National Simultaneous Storytime so we will be celebrating books all week! We will also be running a poster competition in class in the lead up to our fair where students will have the opportunity to win up to $15 worth of books!

With more relaxed COVID restrictions this year we are able to have families come along and purchase books directly from the fair with both cash and EFTPOS options available. Students will visit the fair with their class and bring a wish list home to share with their families.

Please note that Book Club and Book Fair are separate Scholastic services and both stock different items.

We look forward to seeing you there!

SWPBS Update

The start of Term 2 means an update to our very popular lunchtime clubs. These activities allow students of all ages to come together and participate in an activity of interest under the supervision of staff members.

By proactively engaging our children in organised activities, we aim to reduce the instances of antisocial behaviour in the yard. As a staff, we have noticed a significant improvement in this area. Our data shows us that the instances of reported incidents have fallen an impressive 37% from Term 1 2019 compared to Term 1 2021.

The new schedule for lunchtime clubs is as follows:

Monday – Drawing Club with Miss Everett and Miss Wojcik
Tuesday – Book Club with Mrs Van Winckel and Mrs Cairns & Chess Club with Mrs Alonso
Wednesday – Skipping Club with Mr Bruns and Miss Evans & Downball Club with Mr Burnie
Thursday – Gardening Club with Mrs Hoyne and Mrs Burgess & Just Dance with Miss Thomas and Mr Stephens
Friday – Card Games Club with Mr Field

Victorian Premiers’ Challenge

Don’t forget the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open and Drysdale Primary School is excited to be participating. The application being used this year offers a range of exciting features including:

• access to a library catalogue (including book images and blurbs)
• a modern user-friendly interface
• rewarding students with badges as challenge milestones are achieved
• the option for students to mark books as a favourite, give them a star rating or complete a book review

The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by 18 September 2021.

Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books (including 20 or more from the booklist) with their parents. Children from Year 3 to Year 6 are challenged to read 15 books (including 10 or more from the booklist).

All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and former Premiers.

To read the Premier’s letter to parents, view the booklists and for more information about the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge, visit: www.education.vic.gov.au/prc

Second Hand Uniform / Lost Property Update

Winter has certainly hit hard today, which means our most in-demand item at the Second Hand Uniform Shop is jumpers.

We went through all of the lost property last week and returned all the named items back to the students.

Unfortunately, there weren’t anywhere near as many named items as we would have liked. Can we please remind everyone of the importance of clearly naming your clothing, particularly hats and jumpers (as these are the items that are most commonly lost)?

All the unnamed items, which there was a lot, have been washed and will be sold through the Second Hand Uniform Shop. These will be available from Friday afternoon. Over 95% of these items are jumpers.

We are also putting a call out for any unused items of uniform to be donated back to the school, particularly items of winter uniform.

All profits from the Second Hand Uniform Store go to this year’s Junior School Council who will spend it on a legacy gift on behalf of the Class of 2021.

Student Accident Insurance and Private Property

Student accident insurance, ambulance cover arrangements and private property brought to school

Parents and guardians are reminded that the Department of Education and Drysdale Primary School do not provide personal accident insurance or ambulance cover for students.

Parents and guardians of students, who do not have student accident insurance/ambulance cover, are responsible for paying the cost of medical treatment for injured students, including the cost of ambulance attendance or transport as well as any other transport costs.

Private property brought to school by students, staff or visitors is not insured and the Department of Education and Drysdale Primary School do not accept any responsibility for any loss or damage. This can include mobile phones, calculators, toys, sporting equipment and cars parked on school premises.

As the Department of Education and Drysdale Primary School do not hold insurance for personal property brought to schools and has no capacity to pay for any loss or damage to such property, students and staff are discouraged from bringing any unnecessary or particularly valuable items to school.

Gateway Health – Positive Parenting Telephone Service

Please find our Positive Parenting Telephone Service brochure and poster attached.

The Positive Parenting Telephone Service is a telephone-based parent education service for parents, grandparents caring for grandchildren, and careers with children aged 2 to 12 years who may be having parenting difficulties or whose children are at risk of developing significant social and behavioural problems.

The main feature of this program is to provide parent training and assistance through a self-help workbook which will be supported by weekly 30-minute phone calls from a trained Parent Educator over a 6 to 10-week period. This can also be delivered through our online modules.

Appointments are available during the day from Monday to Friday along with Wednesday and Thursday evenings.
This program is funded by The Department of Health and Human Services. Our aim is to increase access to all families including fathers, grandparents, kinship carers and rural families.

We will be very grateful if your forthcoming email or a noticeboard included our details so that the families know about our service.
Thanks again to all the schools that have already promoted our service. It’s much appreciated.
