Term 4 Events

We are working hard to respond to changes to restrictions that allow us to take a different approach to events planned for Term 4. Yesterday’s announcements provided minimal changes for us.

School Photos will be taken on Friday of this week. I am grateful to Lucy Croxford and our Administration Team for coordinating this at such short notice.

We are now permitted to hold a graduation ceremony, however parents and carers are not yet allowed to attend. At the moment we are continuing with our plan to provide digital access to this ceremony. We will do the same for our Year 6 concert presentation.

If regulations are relaxed further before the end of term, we have structured our plans for these events in such a way that we could welcome parents to be a part of these important end of Year 6 landmarks.

Melbourne Cup – We Are Open

Just a reminder that school is open on Tuesday, 3rd November, Melbourne Cup Day.  In Geelong government schools, this is replaced by the Geelong Cup public holiday that we had last week.

Don’t forget that our final curriculum day for 2020 is Wednesday, 2nd December. Our staff will be engaging in a professional learning day focused on developing children as writers.

Prep 2021 Transition

Our transition visits for next year’s DPS Prep students starts tomorrow! As with everything else, this is looking a little different this year, not least because we can still not welcome parents to join us onsite. We are grateful to our Prep Team for their excellent organisation of Transition, despite the many challenges that we have all faced throughout the year.

Our 2021 Prep parents must be commended so highly for their resilience in managing the enrolment process without the opportunity to take a personal tour of the school or meet with our staff in person. We thank you all for your trust in our school and staff and are very much looking forward to tomorrow and beyond.

We are still accepting enrolments for Year Prep in 2021, please encourage anyone you know who hasn’t yet submitted their enrolment documents to please do so as soon as possible. For 2021 and beyond we have permission to extend our catchment to include any family living in Drysdale / Clifton Springs with a 3222 postcode. This better reflects the philosophy of parental choice of enrolment across our growing community.

Parent Opinion Survey

Each year the Department of Education & Training (DET) runs a Parent Opinion Survey to give the parents of children attending government schools an opportunity to provide feedback to the school on a range of questions.

Responses do not identify parents and are useful for us to identify areas of strength and areas for us to work on to provide an even better quality of education for your children. You will have received a link to the survey.

Student Absences via Parent Portal

Did you know that you can report your child’s absence to the school via parent portal?

There’s no need to take additional time phoning us in the mornings anymore! Simply go to the ‘absence tab’ via the parent portal or via the Sentral app. Reporting this way is far more convenient and occurs ‘live’ on the Sentral system, meaning your child’s classroom teacher will be able to see a reported absence immediately.

The mornings can be a busy time for all of us, so if you know your child is going to be away ahead of time, we ask that you please upload your child’s absence directly to the portal or via the app.

The AP WrAP

What an amazing week we have had here at DPS! Book Week saw some pirates take over the office, some amazing classroom displays and a COVID safe parade! Everyone looked fabulous!
In visiting some classes this week and chatting to students about their learning, we saw 3C complete the summarises of Non-fiction texts about Polar Bears, Year One have been weighing objects in Maths and Prep have been inferring a character’s feelings using clues in the text. Some amazing learning!

Tomorrow we have selected students from Year 6 to engage in the Virtual Geelong Youth Summit! The Regional Youth Voice are a collective of Young People who reside across the G21 region who are supported through a partnership between the City of Greater Geelong, Surf Coast Shire, Golden Plains Shire and Colac Area Health. Last year our student leaders attended and one was successful in being elected to the Geelong Youth Council. Students will hear from experts, use teamwork and design thinking to help find innovative solutions to the issue of isolation and loneliness. Project concepts developed on the day will be presented to an expert panel including the CEO of Headspace who will select projects to be funded and delivered across the G21 region.

Parliament Prize Competition

During Term 2, our students were given the opportunity of entering in the Parliament Prize competition. They were to submit a 90-second video statement that they would make to Parliament if they were an MP. They discussed the issues they cared about that is affecting the community. This competition was judged by the members of parliament.

Grace, Isla, Heidi, Elijah and Piper from Year 5 created their own submissions and did such a fantastic job. The issues they addressed were Black Lives Matter, Climate Change and Pollution.

There were 700 submissions from all around Victoria and although these students were not in the final three, Grace was a finalist she was in the top six, they should all feel very proud of the amazing speeches they presented.

It is incredible to see our senior school students participating in such a wonderful competition that showcases student voice and leadership amongst the school community.

World Teachers’ Day – Friday 30th October

Australia will celebrate and thank the teaching profession on World Teachers’ Day – Friday 30th October.

Teachers (with support from parents and carers) have ensured education continues across the country this year, despite major challenges. It’s reinforced the significant role teachers play in the lives of children, their families and communities.

On Friday 30th October, say a big thank you to your teachers and celebrate the bright future of teaching. You may like to make them a thank you card or draw a picture to say thank you.
