As part of our Inquiry unit big idea ‘Earth is part of a system of planets orbiting around a star’ the Year 5 students visited the Victorian Space Science Education Centre for a day full of hands on activities.
“When we first got there we talked about space and the solar system with Patrick. Patrick was very intelligent and could answer anything we asked about space. We looked at the size of the planets, the distance between each planet, how far away from the sun they are and how long it takes them to orbit around the sun. We then put space suits on and went on a mission to Mars. That was awesome! We split into two groups, one group were mission control and the other group went to Mars and conducted lots of experiments about potentially living on Mars one day. VSSEC was so fun.. we had the best day!”
“We learnt about our solar system and the planets that have inhabited it for billions of years, and will inhabit it for billions of years to come. We got to wear space suits for an activity, which was ‘Mission to Mars’. There were two rotations, one was going to Mars and the other was mission control back on Earth. There were two main objectives on mission control. One was to keep the scientists on Mars safe and warn them if something happened and the other objective was to collect answers from the scientists on Mars and write the down the information on a sheet of paper. We had a great time!”
