Last week we had 21 girls from Years 5 & 6 head off to the Bellarine Girls Football competition at South Barwon Reserve. Our team was a mixture of girls who play for our local Drysdale teams and first timers who were experiencing their first taste of Aussie Rules footy.
In our pool matches we played six games against Mandama, St Thomas’, Our Lady Star of the Sea, Torquay, Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads. With some terrific performances by our team, we managed to secure three wins, one draw and two narrow losses. This resulted in our team finishing in third place in our pool and qualifying for a play off game.
Our final match was against the other Torquay team who finished second in their pool. We were placed in this game as St Thomas’, who finished second in our pool, had to leave early. In what was the highest quality game of the day, we fell behind in the first half as Torquay made the most of the wind. In the second half we controlled possession and scoring and our two goals got us close, but not quite close enough as Torquay ended up winning by a couple of points.
Our team were expertly lead by our captain Ciarne and our other experienced players in Alice, Kiarna, Hollie, Ashlea and Sophie. We were also so excited with the performances of our first timers with Mr K now chasing Leisel, Beth, Caitlin, Zari, Isabella and Alicia, among many others, to come and join the Drysdale Football Club!
I would like to thank the parents who managed to drop in during the day to support our girls, you could tell how much it meant to them to have you all there. Thanks also to Emily Kennedy who looked after our first aid all day.
Go Hawks!
Coach K
