Thunderstorm Asthma

Thunderstorm asthma – be prepared this pollen season.
Grass pollen season, which typically runs from October to December each year in Victoria, brings an increase in asthma and hay fever symptoms. It also increases the risk of thunderstorm asthma. For people with asthma or hay fever, especially those who experience wheezing or coughing with their hay fever, thunderstorm asthma can be sudden, serious, and even life threatening.

Drysdale PS will implement a range of measures to keep our school community safe as the risk of thunderstorm asthma increases.

Many of our staff are trained in asthma first aid and we will monitor the VicEmergency app to receive thunderstorm warnings, and where appropriate, keep students indoors when weather forecasts identify greater risk.

During the season there are some things you can do to prepare and protect yourself and your family:

• If your child has ever had asthma, talk to your doctor about what you can do to help protect them from the risk of thunderstorm asthma this pollen season, including updating your asthma action plan. Taking an asthma preventer properly and regularly is key to preventing asthma, including thunderstorm asthma.
• If your child has hay fever, see your pharmacist or doctor for a hay fever treatment plan and check if you should have an asthma reliever puffer. These are available from a pharmacy without a prescription.
• If your child has hay fever and experiences wheezing and coughing it is important to make sure they don’t also have asthma. Speak to your doctor about an asthma action plan.
• Where possible avoid being outside during thunderstorms from October to December, especially during the wind gusts that come before the storm. Go inside and close your doors and windows. If you have your air conditioning on, turn it to ‘recirculate’.

Protect yourself this pollen season – managing asthma and allergies matters.
For more information speak to your doctor. You can also visit the Better Health Channel website.

Friendship Hands

Later this week your child will bring home a print-out of a hand. We use these Friendship Hands so students can identify 5 appropriate friends or classmates that will support them in their engagement and social and emotional learning in 2024.

Class teachers will have discussed this process in class but we ask that you also do this with your child and identify 5 peers they ‘would like’ in their class next year. Although we can’t guarantee they will get all 5, we do guarantee they will have at least one friend they have chosen.

It is important to consider not only who is a good friend but who is a good influence on learning in class and who would be a good fit to be in a class together. We work hard to get the balance right for all classes and ensure everyone is set up for a successful year.

Please return the completed ‘Friendship Hand’ to your child’s teacher by Monday 13th November. This allows a week to be able to talk with your child/ren and record 5 names for classes in 2024.

If you have any queries or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact Kate Wojcik at school via phone or email drysdale.ps@education.vic.gov.au

Whole School Transition

This year our whole school will be involved in 4 transition sessions to help prepare for the upcoming school year. This whole school process started last year and was a great way to prepare all students in all year levels for the changes and expectations of the following year. It is important to us as a school, that we support the needs of everyone and know that moving classes or year levels can be a daunting time for many. Involving the whole school in this program will hopefully alleviate some of the worries around the new school year.

This Thursday November 2nd will be the first of 4 transition sessions this year, with the purpose to support the social and emotional needs of students as they transition into their next year of schooling.

Students will visit their 2024 learning community and participate in friendship building activities, getting to know new people and staff and be involved in discussions about what to expect in their 2024 learning community. They will be given the opportunity to ask questions and discuss the things they’re looking forward to and may be worried about, to prepare them to Start Right in 2024.

Our current Year 6 students will be at DPS for the first 3 sessions, before they also attend their own transition to their 2024 secondary school on Tuesday December 12th. They will be supervised and working with some of our staff during these times, so are expected to attend school as normal.

If you have any queries about the transition process, please email the school at ap.suport@drysdaleps.vic.edu.au or drysdale.ps@education.vic.gov.au

Transition dates and times:
Thursday November 2nd – 9.30am to 10.30am
Thursday November 23rd – 9.30am to 10.30am
Tuesday December 5th – 9.30am to 10.30am
Tuesday December 12th – 9.30am to 12pm – this will be the session students meet in their proposed 2024 teachers and classes.

Scholastic Book Fair

The Book Fair will be held in the Junior School building (sand pit end) starting Tuesday 7th to Friday 10th November and will run after school from 3:30pm-4:00pm.

Students will again visit the fair with their class during the school day and will be provided with a ‘wish list’ which they can bring home and share with families.

Previously the fair has enabled us to access so many new and exciting texts for our library so please come along if you can! This Fair is Buy One Get One Free – so if you purchase a book, you can choose a book to donate a book (of equal or lesser value) back to the school for free.

Support Your Child’s Education With 12 Months Free Internet at Home

The Australian Government has established the School Student Broadband Initiative to provide free home internet for one year for up to 30,000 eligible families with school-aged students.
The initiative aims to boost education opportunities. NBN Co is leading the rollout of this initiative across the country.

How the School Student Broadband Initiative can help your child
Children who can access online learning at home as part of their education are more likely to engage in classroom activities.
Access to fast internet at home can also support children to build their digital skills, learn how to safely use the internet and take part in a world that is more reliant on digital technology.

Eligibility
To be eligible, families must:
• have a child living at home enrolled in an Australian school in 2023.
• not have an active National Broadband Network internet service at their home* (having a mobile internet service does not affect eligibility)
• live in a premises that can access the National Broadband Network through a standard connection. NBN Co will check this for you after you apply.
• register interest with your school and complete a consent form to be assessed for eligibility.

*If an address has been disconnected within 14 days prior to an eligibility check – the address will be classified as ineligible. There may be cases where exceptions can be made, please contact the School Student Broadband Initiative team at SSBI@education.vic.gov.au to discuss further.
