5MB Brooke Burgess And Andy Thornton

Brooke Burgess has begun her family leave prior to the arrival of her second child. We wish her and Pete well and look forward to hearing their news in due course.

Brooke’s replacement in 5MB will be Andy Thornton who is bringing forward her return from her own family leave to provide a familiar face for many of the children. Andy was teaching one of our Year 6 classes before the birth of her second daughter a couple of years ago.

Academic Success

We celebrated two separate academic successes in assembly last week. Marti from Year 6 entered the Australian Mathematics Competition. Marti was awarded a distinction for his performance which was ranked in the top 14% of all entrants in Australia. This is an outstanding result.

We then celebrated the performance of three of our Year 6 students who entered the local Rotary Club’s writing competition. Violet, Heidi and Marti were recognised for the high quality of their entries. Marti was awarded second place.

Congratulations to all of our amazing students.

2022 Class Compositions

We have begun the process of organising classes for 2022. Students filled in and returned their hand that identified five appropriate friends that support them in their engagement and social and emotional learning. Although we can’t guarantee they will get all five, we do guarantee they will have at least one friend they have chosen.

With changes in the number of students in each year group, we are changing our class structure. From next year we will operate three Prep classes, five Year 1/2 classes, four Year 3/4 classes and five Year 5/6 classes.

There are some changes that become necessary so that students do not repeat elements of our programs. Our inquiry program and linked incursions / excursions will now follow a two year cycle. Similarly our camp program will follow a two year cycle.

Year 4 Camp

Last Monday, the Year 4 students and teachers went to camp Kangaroobie. The students enjoyed a fun filled 3 days at camp where they got to participate in a range of activities including a beach walk, bush dancing, an obstacle course, farming, canoeing and the game of life or death. The students all had a great time and enjoyed their first school camp experience.

Tyson :
I really enjoyed the obstacle course at camp because I did all of the obstacles and got really muddy.
Penny:
I enjoyed camp because we didn’t have to do school work. My favourite part was seeing all of the animals and feeding the cows.
Indy:
I enjoyed camp because I got to spend time with all of my friends and sleep in a cabin with them. My favourite activities were the game of life or death and the farm activity.
Harper:
My favourite activity was the game of life or death because we were out in the bush and trying to hide from the hunters. It was funny when we got squirted by the water.
Eli:
At camp, I liked doing the farm activities and riding in the back of the trailer.
Kaitlyn:
My favourite part of camp was riding in the trailer on the farm because it was really fun.
Alannah:
I enjoyed camp because we got to do lots of fun activities. My favourite activity at camp was ‘Life or Death’ because we got to solve clues to try and survive.

Ruby:
I enjoyed camp because I haven’t been on camp before and we got to play around in the bush. My favourite activity at camp was the farm activities because we got to feed cows and we got to see people ride a pig.

Lehana:
I enjoyed camp because we did lots of fun activities. My favourite activity at camp was the rock, paper, scissors game because I won in the end.

Jimmy:
I enjoyed camp because we did lots of activities over the three days of camp. My favourite activity at camp was canoeing because it was my first time doing it and it was challenging, which I like.

Environment News

Congratulations to Heidi and Zara from Year 5 who have been appointed our new school environment leaders.

Heidi and Zara are doing a great job helping people become engaged in making the school clean and healthy.

They have organised a team of helpers to pick up rubbish in the school grounds. Last Tuesday over the school loudspeakers they introduced a little competition for students who collected rubbish from the yard. They were inundated with many little helpers showing up, to collect a bucket and tongs to pick up rubbish to help improve the look of our school grounds.

Each Tuesday the club will meet to hunt down litter in our school with the aim of not needing to do this in future as each student remembers to place unwanted rubbish and scraps in the bins provided. With some additional support from Zara, Heidi and co, Drysdale Primary School from now on will be guaranteed to be clean and sustainable inside and outside!

Gardening Club

It is so exciting that we can get back into our veggie garden on Thursday’s at lunchtime. This week students from Years 1 and 2 helped weed the garden beds and explored the veggies, finding may different insects, worms and bugs.

They also were able to enjoy some beans, peas and silver beet that had been planted earlier this year.

Thanks and great work to all those who attended last Thursday.

Bike Ed

As we start to emerge from lockdown and Remote Learning, some of our normal programs are returning. For the Year 5s, Bike Ed is always such a significant element of their year and we are very pleased that we have been able to get this happening again. Understandably, the students are very excited about this and it is so positive to see so many students riding their bikes to school. For the rest of the community, it is worth noting that on Bike Ed days, which are Tuesdays, there are significantly more bikes around the school. This might mean taking extra care at school pick up and drop off.
