Drysdale Primary School

Parents and Friends

Our newly relaunched Parents and Friends Group has run a couple of events recently.  On Saturday a group of parents and staff ran the Bunnings Saturday BBQ at the Leopold store. With interruptions from COVID this was our third attempt to hold the event.

We raised a total of $1612.30 which is a fantastic effort.  I would like to thank all the volunteers who helped and everyone who supported the BBQ by buying a sausage or two.

The recent Pie Drive also raised $543.75. This money is going to be put towards the construction of an outdoor stage for the children to use during their playtimes as well as giving the Performing Arts program an alternative venue. The School Council in partnership with Parents and Friends are keen to increase the imaginative play options for the children during their breaks.

COVID Update – school dates

All students will finally be back in their classrooms on Friday of this week. This is a couple of days earlier than previously announced as a result of the acceleration of the Road Map. We are very much looking forward to this next step in returning to a more normal school experience. Please note that there are two school closures – tomorrow’s Geelong Cup public holiday and Monday’s pupil free day.

COVID-Linked Requirements

While all students will be back on site on Friday, parents must still remain off site with the exception of going to the school office for business that cannot be done remotely. We are hoping to receive an updated Operations Guide shortly. I will communicate any eased restrictions to our community as these are announced. Thank you to the families of children in years 3 and 4 who returned to school yesterday wearing masks as required.  We greatly appreciate your support and understanding.

School Closure – Pupil Free Day, Monday October 25th

Drysdale Primary will be closed on Monday October 25th for our fourth and final pupil free day of 2021.

This was a good choice in terms of minimizing disruption to parents when it was arranged as it came before the return to school. Now it isn’t, but is too late to rearrange this again.

Drysdale Community Market

The school’s market ran as planned last Sunday morning.  There were nearly 100 stalls as well as strong community support making this a very successful start to the market season. I must acknowledge the hard work and dedication of Jac Absolom, our market coordinator, who has grown the market consistently over the last couple of years to make it such a wonderful community event. The money raised from the market’s operation supports our outstanding Well-Being Program.

My thanks also go to members of our School Council who help stallholders set up each month and to Bellarine and Surrounds Cleaning that is run by a couple of our parents, Carolyn Yewdall and Matthew Wicks. They have taken on the task of cleaning the public toilets at The Reserve before the market.

Tutor Learning Initiative to continue at Drysdale Primary in 2022

We are delighted to share the news that the Victorian Government is continuing the Tutor Learning Initiative (TLI) in 2022. This initiative is designed to address the continued impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on student learning and engagement in Victoria. The extension of the initiative will allow Drysdale Primary to continue to provide our students who need it most with targeted TLI learning support in the 2022 school year. Despite the continued challenges Drysdale Primary and schools across Victoria have faced this year, the TLI has ensured that students, who may have fallen behind or become disengaged, receive the help they need. In 2021, the TLI has enabled Victorian government schools, and qualifying non-government schools, to engage over 6,400 teachers as tutors.

Drysdale Primary would like to thank all the tutors, teachers and families who were involved in supporting our TLI program in 2021. We would also like to thank the Victorian Government and its Education Department for the significant financial investment that is making this program possible. This year, Drysdale Primary was able to offer small group learning for nearly 100 students in reading, writing and mathematics. We are proud of the students’ achievements in 2021. Many have recovered ground lost in 2020 despite further periods of remote learning this year. Drysdale Primary looks forward to continuing our TLI program in 2022 to provide small group learning support that will enable our students to flourish now and in the future. During the summer holidays we will be reviewing the progress and achievement of all students in 2021 to identify those who will benefit most from the continuation of this program.

The AP WrAP

We are so excited for the return to school for all year levels this Friday! It has been a long time coming, with remote learning and some part time school days for Year 3-6 but it will be wonderful to have the whole school filled up again and classes busy with learning and laughing. Please contact the school if your child needs any support with this transition back to school.

Breakfast Club has been running for approximately 10 weeks now and it has been going so well. Thank you to our community sponsors – Bendigo Bank Drysdale and Baker’s Delight Drysdale – without this support we would not have been able to run as successfully as we have. It is open from 8.30 – 8.55am every Friday morning from the small kitchen in the Year 1-2 building. Students have enjoyed a cheese toastie and piece of fruit to start their day, although the vegemite and jam toast is fast becoming a popular option as well.
