Drysdale Primary School

Pupil Free Day – Monday 22nd March

Our second pupil free day is taking place next Monday 22nd March. This means that the school will be closed to students to allow staff to work together on further developing approaches to teaching children to write. This is a major focus of our professional learning for 2021 and will be supported by a further pupil free day early next term on Friday April 23rd.

Drysdale Market And Easter Raffle This Sunday 21st March

The next Drysdale Market will be on Sunday March 21st at the Drysdale Reserve from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. To coincide with this, the school is running an Easter Raffle.

We are looking for volunteers to help sell tickets at a school stall at the market – 8 people for 30 minutes each would be perfect! Feel free to buddy up and bring a friend! Many hands make light work!

If you are willing to help, please email me philip.dunlop-moore@education.vic.gov.au or email the office drysdale.ps@education.vic.gov.au this week with your preferred time.

If you are a parent or friend interested in helping with the newly formed Parents and Friends Group but have not been able to make any of the recent meet and greet times, this would also be a time to head down to the market and hear about plans for the Parents Group in 2021.

Notifiable Illnesses

Please note that we currently have confirmed cases of Chicken Pox in year 4 and year 2. We have also had a confirmed case of Hand, Foot and Mouth in year 3.

This is important information for people with specific medical conditions who can be at increased risk.

If your child develops symptoms, please take them to your GP. Thank you.

Year 3-6 Camps

Thank you to everyone who responded to our recent survey about camps. We are looking to run a camp program this year in Term 4 for children in years 3 to 6 and will be sending out details shortly.

The major change is that we are investigating an urban camp in Melbourne rather than Canberra for year 6 students. We believe that in these uncertain times, Canberra is too far away and is at greater risk of cancellation as it involves crossing two borders.

Please note that the increased financial uncertainty means that we will base our preparations on confirmed numbers of those who have given permission and paid the deposit for their child to attend by the due date with no exceptions for late payment.

Student Led Conference Booking – Power Outage

Our Term 1 Student Led Conferences will be taking place on Monday, 29th March and Tuesday, 30th March .

These are times when your child will be able to talk to you with their teacher about the learning they have been doing this term.

Bookings are necessary and can be made through the Parent Portal under the interview tab.

Please note that the booking system is now open.

Each appointment is ten minutes. If you have more than one child at school, please leave at least ten minutes between their appointments to allow you time to move between the classes.

If you are unable to come onsite due to medical reasons please send a portal message to your child’s teacher.

Yesterday we were without full power for the first part of the day. This was caused by an issue with the supply coming into the school. I would like to thank everyone for their patience.

I know this presented challenges for parents trying to book appointments for student led conferences. I would also like to thank Powercor for their very prompt response that meant the fault was repaired and power restored shortly before recess.

The WrAP

Over the past week we have been able to spend some time in classes, working with teachers and supporting student learning. In Prep, students have been reading ‘Wombat Stew’ and working on recalling important details including who the characters were. They have been working hard to read high frequency words and use pictures to help with predicting more challenging words.

Year 3 are amazing authors and have been working hard on developing an introduction including the ‘Hook’ and ‘Point of View’ for their Persuasive texts. We are looking forward to seeing how the body of their text’s develop over Week 9.

We have had time in Year 2 classes for some Personal Learning sessions, sharing some stories with each class that link to our school values of Acceptance and Integrity. Classes listened to books by Kathryn Otoshi and talked about how they can include each other in games in the yard at recess and lunch. I look forward to sharing these books with Year 1 in the coming weeks.

RDA starts this Friday! We are excited to again be involved in such an amazing program for some of our students!
Just a reminder for students involved to wear long pants!!!!!!

We are very much looking forward to the last few weeks of term where we will be attending events such as the Year 2 Bellarine Railway excursion, Lightning Premiership, Cross Country, RDA, Year 6 Inquiry display and of course the Slime Spectacular!

Please see more for photos

Every Day Counts

Protecting the safety and well-being of children through the reporting and monitoring of absenteeism is the responsibility of both parents/carers and schools.

Please remember if your child is going to be away or late for school please enter their absence on the sentral parent portal/app, or email at drysdale.ps@education.vic.gov.au  early in the morning so your child’s absence can be recorded correctly.

There are times when we will need to contact you, including on the day if your child is absent and you haven’t informed the school as to why.

Do we have your most up to date contact details? If not, please contact the school so we can update our records. Please include parent/carers’ name, address, phone numbers, email address and emergency contact details. Please remember to contact the school if any of these details or your circumstances change.

Slime Spectacular Update

The countdown is on for the Slime Spectacular and there is a lot of excitement building.

Mr Dunlop-Moore helped to create a lot of this excitement by mentioning that there is an opportunity for students to slime either a teacher, a parent volunteer, or even a Principal! This is one of a few updates that we are sharing this week.

There is also a lot of excitement in the community as this is the first real chance to have a big crowd involved in a whole school event after the challenge that was 2020. This is also our first major fundraiser since Obstacool way back in April 2019.

Slime a Teacher/Parent/Principal

Positions along the course to slime either the Teacher/Parent Volunteer Run or the Principals’ Run will be available for sale from next week. These will cost $10 and will allow the holder to a position on one of the obstacles for one of the runs.

Tickets will be available at the front office, and the House Captains will also head around the classes to sell them. These will commence next week.

Guess the Easter Eggs

The Junior School Council is also running a Guess the Easter Egg competition. Guesses will be 50c each and the winner or closest to the winner will receive the entire jar! The JSC will come around to classrooms to sell these guesses next week. They will also have a stall on the day to sell the remaining spots.

Fundraising Update

Thank you to all those who have signed up and created a fundraising page at www.myprofilepage.com.au. There are still a lot of families who have not yet done this and we encourage everyone to get involved to raise some much needed funds to help improve our school.

We have made such a positive start and are well on our way towards our fundraising goal of $10,000 to build the new outdoor stage.

Prep B are currently our champion fundraising class. Be sure to add your child to their class so that their efforts go towards the class’ total.

Remember that raising funds entitles you access to a range of free prizes that are in the fundraising booklet.

We only have two weeks to go to raise as much money as possible!

Volunteers

There are only 20 more spots left to help with sliming the students. These spots are always the best fun and also give you a chance to join in the Teacher/Parent Volunteer Run later in the day.

It would be a real shame to miss out. Be sure to visit https://signup.com/go/PzBwkPO to secure one of the remaining positions.

Year 2 Dell Excursion

Last week, to further explore our Inquiry Big Idea of ‘We are part of a personal and local community where landforms and culture are different from place to place’, Year 2 ventured to The Dell to explore it’s unique history and natural landforms. We immersed ourselves in engaging activities including beachcombing, a historical walk and an exploration of The Dell’s landforms and ecosystem. We learnt about The Dell’s connection to indigenous culture and enjoyed sharing our knowledge of our Inquiry focus throughout the day.

SWPBS – Lunchtime Clubs

By Charlotte (56T) and Milah (56T)

As part of the School Wide Positive Behaviour Program (SWPBS) we have several lunch time activity clubs including a Card Club hosted by Mr. Field. This club is great way to interact comfortably with people with similar interests in a friendly environment where you can play the games your way.

Here you can play a wide range of card games with your friends from Pokemon to Snap.

Here some great reviews from participating students:

Piper (6K) said the card club is really fun and it is a great way to socialise. She played with Emma (34B) who said she liked having people to play with and Lily (34B) who said she enjoyed playing cards.

This inclusive club is for all ages and everyone is welcome. It is a great way to meet new people.

Clifton Springs Golf Club Longest Drive Comp

On a beautiful sunny Friday afternoon last week, Drysdale Primary School were invited to enter a team of teachers and students to compete in a longest drive competition against Clifton Springs Primary School.

Mr Burnie, Mr Bruns, Mr Sinnott and Mr Kennedy were joined by Koby, Ashton, Jett and Ethan from Year 6 as we took on our neighbours. It was wonderful to see a number of other teachers and students from both schools coming along to support their teams. We even had a Drysdale PS legend in Mr Page stop by to give us his support!

Each player hit five drives and their longest drive was added to the team’s total. Despite some terrific hitting from our team, Clifton Springs PS were too good on the day and were worthy winners of the inaugural trophy.

Overall, it was a fantastic event and our students loved the chance to rub shoulders with some celebrities who also came along. A few teachers will be hitting the driving range over the next 12 months to improve their contribution to the team in readiness for next year’s event.

Click read more to view some photos from the event.
