Drysdale Primary School

Family Dance Night

Drysdale Primary School’s Family Dance Night is happening this Thursday evening from 5pm.  This is a welcome back to school social event where the children lead some dancing and families have the opportunity to meet other families in our school community. The Dance Night takes place on the basketball courts.  If it is raining, we can move into the hall instead. I am looking forward to meeting lots of families.

There will be a BBQ (sausages for $2 and hamburgers for $3) to provide a dinner option for families. (cash only)

Coffee and soft drink will be available at the canteen.

Please see more for the full menu and prices.

Mini Mudder is Back!

On the last day of this term, we will be holding a mini-mudder! This is a fun day when the children go over, under and through a series of muddy obstacles. There is a small charge to participate in this incursion, as well as a permission form on the Parent Portal (families will receive a notification when the permission form is available). Students will need to wear very old clothes because they will be both muddy and wet by the time they finish the course. Further details will be provided as we get closer to the day.

The AP WrAP

Week 5! Wow where is this term going?

This week some amazing students came to the AP office full of excitement about what they were learning!

Heidi from Year 5 presented to us her work about ‘Timezones.’ She included information about Greenwich Mean Time and the time difference between and here and Darwin!

Will and Eli from Year 3 completed some data collection they devised questions that allowed them to collect accurate data! Their questions were based around pets and which type would be suitable for the classroom! I am not sure about the spider but I bet the chimpanzee would make learning even more interesting!

Nathan from Year 6 attended a ‘Bug House’ creating workshop. Nathan used recycled wood and glued and screwed the pieces together to make a box. Nathan then placed different sized pieces of wood and branches in the box and drilled different sized holes into them to create ‘houses’ for the bugs. We are extremely grateful to Nathan as he has donated this to our veggie garden here at school. He placed it next to our existing ‘Bug Hotel.’ An interesting fact from Nathan “The Bug Box needs to face East, West or South as North is too hot for them.” Thanks Nathan

Parent Helper Sessions

Thanks to those parents who have expressed an interest in volunteering in their child’s class. Our Parent Helper Sessions will begin in Term 2.  More information will follow at a later date.

Please see read more for photos of these amazing achievements.

Flexibuzz Parent Communication App

We are committed to strengthening the communication between the school and home, particularly between parents and teachers. The introduction of FlexiBuzz opens up a new channel where the school and teachers can communicate directly with parents in a timely and convenient manner.

To join our FlexiBuzz community, go to the app store (available on both Apple and Android), search for FlexiBuzz and download the app.  Once it is downloaded, search for Drysdale Primary School and register. Then select which group (class) you would like to join. This will then allow you to have a private or group communication with your child’s classroom teacher.  It will also allow you to receive notifications specific to your child’s class, e.g. the bus returning from an excursion is running ten minutes late.  You can also choose to receive reminders, e.g. the permission form for next week’s excursion is due back on Friday.

Click read more to learn about FlexiBuzz features and how to register.

Year 6 EcoLinc Excursion

The Year 6s enjoyed a very successful excursion to both Serendip Sanctuary in Lara and EcoLinc in Bacchus Marsh. This excursion was part of our Term 1 big idea, “living things grown and adapt to survive the physical condition of their environment” and gave the students the opportunity to see first-hand examples of animals and plants that call the Western Victorian Volcanic Plains their home. The students investigated these animals and plants and learnt all about the behavioural and structural adaptations that allow the species to survive. We also looked at some introduced species and the reasons they have thrived, along with the impact they have had on the native wildlife and vegetation. Finally, we looked at the impact of humans on this delicate and ever-shrinking natural environment. Click read more to view a photo gallery of our day.

As part of our Inquiry unit big idea the Year 2s are learning about our community and the land forms that shape it.  On Friday the Year 2s went to the Dell.

“We learnt about the bath house, mineral water and plants we can eat like the salt bush. My favourite part was eating the plants and making my map. We had fun!”

Year 5 VSSEC Excursion

As part of our Inquiry unit big idea ‘Earth is part of a system of planets orbiting around a star’ the Year 5 students visited the Victorian Space Science Education Centre for a day full of hands on activities.

“When we first got there we talked about space and the solar system with Patrick. Patrick was very intelligent and could answer anything we asked about space. We looked at the size of the planets, the distance between each planet, how far away from the sun they are and how long it takes them to orbit around the sun. We then put space suits on and went on a mission to Mars. That was awesome! We split into two groups, one group were mission control and the other group went to Mars and conducted lots of experiments about potentially living on Mars one day. VSSEC was so fun.. we had the best day!”

“We learnt about our solar system and the planets that have inhabited it for billions of years, and will inhabit it for billions of years to come. We got to wear space suits for an activity, which was ‘Mission to Mars’. There were two rotations, one was going to Mars and the other was mission control back on Earth. There were two main objectives on mission control. One was to keep the scientists on Mars safe and warn them if something happened and the other objective was to collect answers from the scientists on Mars and write the down the information on a sheet of paper. We had a great time!”

Purple Day – Friday 6 March

Purple Day aims to encourage people to talk about epilepsy and to remind those who live with seizures, that they are not alone.

Purple Day was founded in 2008, by nine-year-old Cassidy Megan of Nova Scotia, Canada. Motivated by her own struggles with epilepsy, Cassidy started Purple Day in an effort to get people talking about the condition and to let those impacted by seizures know that they are not alone. She named the day Purple Day after the internationally recognised colour for epilepsy, lavender.

To support epilepsy awareness, the Junior School Council are encouraging everyone to ‘wear a touch of purple’ this Friday. This could include a purple hair ribbon, purple headband, purple socks, purple t-shirt, purple badge, etc, etc.

Please note, this is not a casual clothes day, nor is it a fundraiser. The JSC are simply raising awareness about epilepsy and showing our support to those in our community who live with seizures.
