NAPLAN

NAPLAN Week

Next week the children in Year 3 and Year 5 will be taking part in the National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests.  The tests themselves happen on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday with the option for children who have been absent on any of these days to catch up on tests on Friday.  The tests cover work taught to the students during the previous couple of years and are useful for providing a snapshot of each child’s progress.

Sayembara Lisan

On Friday twenty of our children from Years 3 to 6 are taking part in this year’s Indonesian speaking competition, Sayembara Lisan.  It is very exciting to see how positively all the children have embraced the opportunity to participate including both those who put themselves for selection originally and those who have been chosen to represent our school.  I know that they have been practising hard at school with Bu Hurt and at home with their parents.

Cross Country

On Thursday almost fifty of our children in Years 4 to 6 will be representing the school at the District Cross Country in Eastern Gardens.  These are the children who qualified by coming in the top eight for their age at our school cross country last term.  I would like to thank the staff and parents who have been working with the children and will be supporting them on Thursday.

ICAS Tests

Each year we offer the opportunity for children in Years 3 to 6 to take part in the ICAS testing program organised by the University of New South Wales.  Children who thought they might be interested in taking part took home a letter at the end of last week.  Further copies of this letter are available from our ICAS coordinator, Mr Bradford, for anyone who wants a copy and missed out last week.  Please note that there are couple of changes from the arrangements that have operated in previous years.  All tests are now happening in a two week period at the beginning of September.  All tests will now be completed online.  Tests will still take place as a group during school time.

2019 Premier's reading challenge slider

Premiers Reading Challenge

The Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge is now open and Drysdale Primary School is excited to be participating.

The Challenge is open to all Victorian children from birth to Year 10 in recognition of the importance of reading for literacy development. It is not a competition; but a personal challenge for children to read a set number of books by 6th September 2019.

Children from Prep to Year 2 are encouraged to read or ‘experience’ 30 books with their parents and teachers. Children from Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read 15 books.

All children who meet the Challenge will receive a certificate of achievement signed by the Victorian Premier and former Premiers.

To read the Premier’s letter to parents, view the booklists and for more information about the Victorian Premiers’ Reading Challenge, visit: www.education.vic.gov.au/prc

Your child’s personal login details will be sent home in their diary by the end of this week.

Camp Australia

How quickly is the year flying by, it is hard to believe we are already in May.

Last week the children who attended OSHC engaged in activities such as making dioramas, playing board games and card games including Monopoly, UNO, Chess and Checkers, playing Gaga and Soccer, talking about the AFL results and the current positioning of the AFL ladder, and making tracks with the dominos, and talking about the Lego Masters TV show, and making their own Lego Masterpieces. Another highlight was celebrating Star Wars day a day early by playing Star Wars light sabre limbo.
