Drysdale Primary School

Official Opening of our New Buildings

Next Tuesday morning Minister Lisa Neville, our local Member of Parliament, will be officially opening our new school buildings.  Parents are most welcome to join us between 9.50 and 10.15 for this event.  This has been a project four years in the making at a cost of $3.4 million.  The result is outstanding and provides our students with a learning environment that supports the high quality of teaching and learning at Drysdale Primary.  I would like to acknowledge the vision and practical support of the Education Department which has worked closely with the school to create a design that enables our teachers to provide a very high quality of education.  I would like to thank our Architects from the Bradley Dicker Group and the builders from BDH Constructions who have turned these ideas into the reality our children are enjoying.  At a school level the School Council has been heavily involved throughout the four year process.  The staff and children have been very flexible, especially in moving classrooms frequently.  In doing this we have not had to pay for temporary accommodation which has allowed us to complete additional works such as raising the corridor ceiling in the year 3 to 6 section of the school.

Planning for 2019

At the end of last week the children wrote the names of five friends with whom they would like to be in class with next year.  We will do our best to place them with at least one of these five friends.  Please understand that it is simply not possible to place them with all five friends.  If your child has a specific need that affects their class placement for 2019, please can you provide a brief explanation of this need in writing to me before the end of school on Friday November 2nd.  This is an occasion when we have to work to the deadline.  So we will not be able to take account of information provided after this date.  Creating classes is a hugely complex process that takes the whole of November before we believe we have final drafts.

Drysdale Community Market

School Assembly 29th October and Kids Matter Assembly November 5th

There will not be a whole school assembly on Monday October 29th.  This is because the hall will still be full of art work from the Art Show from the previous Friday evening.  Therefore the Kids Matter Assembly we normally hold in the fourth week of term will now be held over to Monday November 5th.

Our value of the week is Enjoyment.  This seems particularly appropriate in a week when the Year 5 children are starting our annual camp program with their trip to Maldon.  I shall be driving up to share the camp with them on Thursday. This is one of our most active camps and is the culmination of our bike education program. This is a particularly important skill in a town with an increasing amount of traffic locally.

Drysdale Primary School Community Market

The Drysdale market, which has been run for nearly forty years by members of the school community starts its new season this Sunday, October 21st.  The market runs from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. and is held at the Drysdale Recreation Reserve.  We are very fortunate to have a dedicated co-ordinator, Bre Gage, and a new team of helpers drawn from our parents and school councillors.  I would encourage everyone to come down and support the market which is one of the school’s main fundraising efforts of the year.  The money raised from this event helps to pay for the additional welfare support for the children through the Inclusion Team led by Blanche Denmead.  This makes such a big difference to the children’s happiness at school.

Spring Fair

Flower Shower
The fantastic Flower Shower is happening at Spring Fair again this year.  We have booked the cherry picker and numbered the flowers.  We have received very generous donations from JT Dixon Packaging and Kemellies Timber Flooring. Now you have the chance to win one of three fabulous prizes – 1st prize $500, 2nd prize $300, 3rd prize $200, wouldn’t that come in handy for the summer holidays? Numbered flowers are available for sale at the office from this week, $5 per flower purchased before the Fair and $10 purchased at the Fair.  So buy them now and cross your fingers that yours is the closest to the target when the flowers are dropped from the cherry picker at the Fair on Friday 16 November.

Lucky Cups
Another popular item returning for 2018 are the Lucky Cups. We will be having a casual dress day on Friday 26 October. We ask that instead of a gold coin donation you send a small item that we can use for the Lucky cups this year.  Items such as stationary, hair ties, down balls, novelty items, lip gloss, slime, small figurines are all great.  A bag and note will come home this week and we ask for this be returned  with your child on Friday 26 October.

Request for hay bales!
Do you have any hay bales at home or on your farm that the school could borrow for seating at the Spring Fair this year? We would love to borrow some rectangular hay/straw bales to act as natural seating at Spring Fair. If you think you can assist please get in touch with the front office on 5251 2272.

Fresh Fruit

Each week we request parent volunteers from a year level to help cut up fresh fruit and distribute it to classes. If you have time to spare on a Friday morning we would love your help, regardless of what year level your child is in. Younger siblings are more than welcome to join you and play with the toys as long as they remain supervised. Please sign in at the office and make your way to the staff room from 9am.

This Friday, 19th October, we are asking for parent volunteers of Year 1 students to help cut up fruit.

Thank you to the Drysdale and Portarlington Community Bank Branches of the Bendigo Bank for sponsoring our school’s Fresh Fruit program for 2018.
