Happy Christmas and Thank You

As this is the last Link for 2017 I would like to wish all the members of our wonderful school community a very happy Christmas and New Year.  We have had an amazing year at school with so many successes to celebrate.  The children have risen to every challenge presented to them whether it has been in the classroom, out playing sport, performing in concert or producing amazing art work.  There have been traditional events such as Family Dance Night and new events such as Mini Mudder.  Our Spring Fair broke all sorts of records and was definitely our most successful yet.  The partnership between home and school was best typified by the replacement of the prep playground.  A lot of fundraising and discussion with parents and in School Council contributed to this.  Everything has been done against a background of significant building work.  This normally completely disrupts a school; but not Drysdale.  I would like to acknowledge the support of the whole community in ensuring that our children have continued to enjoy an exceptional year despite the changes we have had to make to our normal operating processes.  The staff have done a brilliant job making sure our core purpose of providing the best education we can has remained at the heart of everything we do.  The children never cease to amaze me.  Thank you all.

Our end of Semester 2 reports have been released on our Parent Portal and can be accessed using the user name and passwords previously sent to you.  I hope that you enjoy sharing your children’s many successes and identifying the next steps of learning to be tackled in 2018.  Much of the layout of the report is determined centrally by the education department.  Please note that where we are commenting on progress, it is the amount of progress made since this time last year.  Broadly a child is expected to make one level’s progress in the Victorian Curriculum in one year of learning and to be at the end of the level equivalent to their year group i.e. the end of level 2 at the end of year 2 etc.  Writing and proof reading 575 reports is a huge undertaking.  Although we make every effort to ensure they are perfect, if you find an error of spelling or grammar, please let us know and we will be happy to reissue a corrected version.  Parents are warmly invited to add a comment to their child’s report.  Please email any comments to drysdale.ps@edumail.vic.gov.au.

Staffing Update

Following an appointment’s process we have provisionally appointed Ms Nicole Alonso to the position of Learning Specialist.  This is a senior leadership position that will be responsible for developing and extending our Literacy programs.  Ms Alonso will also become the third member of the Year 2 team teaching 2A.  She will be joining us from her current role as a Leading Teacher at Northern Bay College where among other responsibilities she has been the leader of the Prep to Year 2 classes at the Hendy Street campus.  She will be visiting to meet her class on Thursday.

We have also appointed Shane Kennedy to the position of Leading Teacher with responsibility for developing parental engagement.  This area of is one of our strategic goals within our new four year plan written following our review at the end of term 3.  I would like to congratulate Shane on this promotion.  His class teaching role with next year’s Year 6 group is unaffected by this appointment.

Prep Excursion to Fairy Park

Last Thursday our Prep’s enjoyed an excursion to Fairy Park to complement their work in Fairy Tales.

Fairy Park was good because we got to see the witch and it was really fun to press the frogs and go through the Aladdin cave. Trinity

I liked Pinocchio because I like the characters in the story. I liked the big castle because it was so high up. Ivy

I liked it when we I was getting wet from the big water wheel. My favourite thing was the playground. Jayden

There was fairy tales and my favourite one was Jack and the Beanstalk. I liked going to the playground, I was going up a pole, to the tunnel and down another pole. Connor

Fairy Park was fun because I got to see the Seven Dwarfs. My favourite thing was the dragon because the dragon was pretending to sleep. Patricia

I liked the playground because there were so many tunnels that went to different places. I liked Jack and the Beanstalk. Luke

Students vs Staff Sport

To finish off our House Sport competition we have been playing some Students vs Staff games over these last two weeks of term. The Basketball and Netball games went the way of the Staff, largely due to the height differential. But, with Cricket, Dodgeball and possibly Soccer to come, the Students are very keen to win some bragging rights over their teachers. Perhaps the culmination of all that activity might slow the Staff down as well!
