Run Geelong

Congratulations to all the members of the school community who supported Run Geelong on Sunday. We had quite a crowd representing the school in events ranging from the 12km run to the 6km run and walk as well as the shorter event for the younger children. I was particularly impressed with some of our older students who confidently tackled the 6km run and recorded good times in fairly hot weather.

Class Locations for 2018

We are planning a slight rearrangement of the locations of the senior classes in 2018. Now that the Year 6 students have officially moved into their new learning area, we will reverse the order of the classes in that corridor so that the Year 5s are next to the Year 6s followed by the Year 4s and finally the Year 3s in the classrooms currently occupied by the Preps. The 2018 Preps will be in the new Prep building currently under construction next to Year 1.

There is a final stage of our school rebuild scheduled for the first half of next year. This involves modifying the senior corridor and classrooms. The plan is to bring natural light into the corridor and to adapt the classrooms to allow more flexible styles of learning. Therefore the portables where our Year 5s are working will not have permanent classes. One pair of classrooms will house the library. The other pair will be used to accommodate classes for a couple of weeks at a time when they have to relocate temporarily to allow the building work to take place. Although there is some disruption while the work is happening, the end result is going to be a transformation of the physical spaces where the children learn.

Student Free Day – Friday 1st December

The fourth and final student free day of the year is being held on Friday December 1st. The school will be closed to students on that day to allow for staff training. During the day the staff will be working through the requirements of the new strategic plan, learning about the most recent developments in literacy and numeracy teaching as well as beginning preparations for the 2018 school year. The school year finishes on Friday December 22nd at 2:30pm. In that final week there will be an assembly as usual on Monday morning and a final Leavers Assembly from 9am on Friday December 22nd.

Essential Educational Items Charge

Information will be going home over the next week about the 2018 Essential Education Items (also know as School Fees), please read this information carefully. Almost all of the costs associated with educating the wonderful children at Drysdale Primary are met by grants from the government through the Department of Education and Training. Schools have a small additional charge to cover the costs of materials that the children actually take possession of e.g. exercise books and other stationery, as well as covering the cost of items such as software licences, specialist resources and materials. This letter also contains information about how parents can spread the annual cost ($200 per student) across the full year. It is essential that parents pay this charge. If the school was to pay these costs for all of the students in the school from the grants provided by the government, this would reduce the number of teachers we could employ resulting in increased class sizes.

Camp Australia

It has been another busy week at OSHC. With the hot weather the children have been choosing to spend more time inside, with the squirt water bottles being a highlight for many children as they enjoyed being wet. Other popular activities have included lego construction, making pin art, discussing Spring Fair, paper planes, building things with the straws and connectors, playing fruit salad, and imaginative and dramatic play.
